A Conversation with Gilbert King and Richard Graham

A conversation with Gilbert King, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and retired Judge Richard Graham. The two discuss Gilbert's book Beneath a Ruthless Sun, a true story about the case of Jesse Daniels. Jesse, a nineteen-year-old mentally challenged young man, was arrested in Lake County, Florida, and taken to the Florida State Hospital, in Chattahoochee, where he was incarcerated without trial, for fourteen years. Richard Graham, acting as Jesse's attorney, was a key figure in suing for Jesse's eventual release. The case was settled in front of the US Supreme Court, and was one of the cases sited in the creation of the Baker Act, which Richard Graham helped draft. The Baker Act limits the amount of time a person deemed mentally or emotionally unfit can be held without trial. It inspired similar legislation in many other states. This is one of my favorite projects, on which I was fortunate enough to work as Director of Photography, A Camera Operator, and Editor.

West Volusia Historical Society - Oral History Project

The West Volusia Historical Society has an ongoing project to preserve the lived experiences of long time Volusia county residents. Volusia county, by area, is one of the largest counties in Florida, and includes DeLand, Daytona Beach, Lake Helen, Pierson, and many other townships. DeLand is the county seat, and was built around Florida’s citrus industry.

I have volunteered with West Volusia Historical Society for several years, specifically working on the Oral History Project. I have worked with Kaye Armstrong and Tony Foresta, both Emmy award winning documentary film makers, who spent most of their career working out of New York City. We are a small team, so I have had the opportunity to learn gain experience in all aspects of the production process, from lighting and camera work, to color grading and editing.
